History of the Production Process 

In the mid 1990s international maritime law was changed to prohibit the dumping of waste at sea by merchant shipping, - a practice that had been routinely taking place for centuries.
Soon after a large cruise liner was photographed illegally dumping waste off the coast of Florida. 
The owners were subsequently fined $1million, but the US judge took the enlightened approach of offering a half million-dollar rebate if the cruise line agreed to implement a total waste management system.
Glass presented a unique problem. It cannot be incinerated and occupies the same space whether full or empty. So it required to be safely and efficiently “crushed”, and then stored until it could be offloaded.
As no suitable equipment met the specification, a  consultant engineer was engaged to design a rugged processor that would reduce the overall volume of glass, and make it safe to handle.
It was during the testing phase that the unique process was first discovered to densify glass down to 15% of its original volume, and also render it totally sharp free and safe to handle.
The Imploder proved a success, Krysteline was formed and the process patented worldwide.

EGFM Production Process 
As you can probably imagine there is a sophisticated production process in place which turns your old wine bottles into a safe and effective filter media. EGFM is manufactured by a mechanically induced high-speed process that transfers energy into the glass feedstock resulting in the destruction of glass whilst rendering it sharp free. It does not grind, mill, hammer or flail the glass. It does not abrade, so EGFM retains a smooth shiny surface. The various stages in the production process are highlighted below.

Stage 3 Sharp free and un-graded basic glass cullet is initially produced.

Stage 4 Further processing is carried out to produce a sharp free, clean, dry and graded environmentally
                                             friendly product with excellent properties in water filtration.

How safe is EGFM? 

DMS Enviro are the manufacturers of EGFM and they give an absolute guarantee that the recycled glass filter media that they produce is “Sharp Free”.
This is stated on their compliance certificate.
Questions have been asked on what would happen if there is a catastrophic failure of the collection system at the bottom of the pool filter and the EGFM passes unexpectedly and continuously into the pool and comes in contact with bathers (as happens with sand).
This happened at the Wales National Pool in Swansea on the training pool in 2009.
As a result about one tonne of media of all grades went into the pool over a period of a few weeks.
The EGFM was shown to be no more than dangerous than sand.
The pool was not closed.
The EGFM was vacuumed out each time the pool was closed.
There were no complaints from bathers and more importantly NO CUTS.
EGFM has been used on approximately 100 public pools in UK and has never had a cut reported.
It has also been used in hundreds of private pools in the UK and many hundreds in Europe again with no reported problems.

What is Glass Filtration Media

Eco Glass Filter Media is the new environmentally friendly and cost effective filter media
that provides a viable alternative to sand. Made from recycled glass, it doesn't involve intrusive
mining and the use of scarce resources. It has the green credentials, and with its superior
performance is also cost effective against sand.

It is more efficient 
Saving on backwashing and the resultant water, energy and chemical treatment costs.
 ■ Its angular to sub-angular particle shape and bound silica content provides a 30% improvement
    in turbidity removal over silica sand.
 ■ It generally removes finer particles from water than the equivalent grade of silica sand.
 ■ Its non porous composition means it is less likely to 'clump' or channel than silica sand.
 ■ With superior permeability, back washes take less time, saving water/sewer charges, energy and 
    chemical treatment costs.

It is is cleaner
It is less susceptible to bio-fouling as, unlike silica sand The glass particles have a smoother surface, so 
bacteria cannot get trapped in any cracks or flaws, which means less remedial action and again less
chemical treatment to destroy pollutants.

You require less material
It is less dense than sand, requiring 15% less media to fill the equivalent filter.

It does not degrade
It therefore has a longer life span and may not need changing even when the filters are due for refurbishment.

Why Change the Sand in My Filter?

Like all filters, Swimming pool Sand Filters require to have the filtration medium replaced at regular intervals to maintain the clarity of the water and the healthy sanitising of the swimming pool.
The normal time to replace the sand in your filter is between 4~5 years.
With EGFM it is expected that the life of the Glass filtration medium will be for the life of the filter itself, four times as longer than sand - up to 20 years.
With this in mind and the fact that EGFM is by far the most efficient filtration medium it makes good economic sense to replace sand with (EGFM) Eco Glass Filter Media
